Verb Tenses Note
In the original letter by Pliny, verb tenses frequently shift between different past forms.
This stylistic feature is characteristic of the original text.
In the present edition, the verb tenses have been left as in the source in order to remain as faithful as possible to the original letter.
In future editions, the verbal system may be regularized and rendered consistently in the simple past (or its closest equivalent) for reasons of narrative clarity and readability.

Note on a Character’s Speech

Some readers did not immediately grasp the humorous intent behind the way an aristocratic female character speaks.
The use of a deliberately softened or affected “r” is exaggerated on purpose and serves to give the character an air of self-importance in public.
In more intimate moments — particularly during arguments with her husband — she switches back to a regular pronunciation of the “r”, highlighting the contrast between her constructed social persona and her true character.

In reference to the Fiorelli method, the material used to fill the cavities left by decomposed bodies beneath the ash is referred to in this book as gesso.
While this term is understandable, the more commonly used and accurate term in English is plaster.

Si tratta di una caratteristica stilistica propria del testo originale.
Nella presente edizione, i tempi verbali sono stati mantenuti secondo l’originale, nel tentativo di restare il più fedeli possibile alla fonte.
Nelle edizioni future, la narrazione potrà essere uniformata utilizzando un tempo passato coerente (come il passato remoto, o l’equivalente più appropriato) per ragioni di chiarezza e leggibilità.

Alcuni lettori non hanno colto l’intento umoristico legato al modo di parlare di uno dei personaggi femminili di rango aristocratico.
L’uso della erre moscia è volutamente esagerato ed è impiegato dal personaggio per darsi un tono e apparire più importante in pubblico.
Nelle scene più intime, in particolare durante i litigi con il marito, il personaggio torna invece a parlare con una erre “normale”, a sottolineare il contrasto tra l’immagine sociale costruita e la sua personalità reale.
