DAFNE MARILU AMALIA - ROMAN MILITARY ART

Decima Taurina Caelestis (or Decimo Taurino Caelestis in the masculine form) is the name I use as a legionary. Becoming part of a legion demanded immense hard work, determination, sweat, and tears — regardless of my natural abilities. In ancient Rome, there was no concept of a female legionary, so some disagree with my participation in this practice, which I deeply love and am passionate about.

Adversity can be especially harsh for a woman, particularly in a chauvinistic country like Italy, where I currently practice. To those critics, I simply reply that I am no less than any man, and I do as I please.

As a legionary, my goal is to excel in combat and to increasingly resemble a male warrior in appearance and discipline.

I have a profound love for Roman history and its former glory — its architecture, ingenuity, art, and the visionary path it once followed. Since immersing myself in its military practice, it has naturally become a great source of inspiration for my artwork.
